This Week's News & Headlines: Male Midwife Loves Pain, Memories From The Womb, Depression Risks, and Accident A-hole Golfer

This Week's DadsPregnant.com Headlines:

So, here's what I have for you this week:

A male midwife urges pregnant women to avoid painkillers and feel the pain. Perhaps, if this particular male midwife gave birth via his penis, pregnant women might be more open to his suggestion. I find this one fascinating —a recent study reports that memories form at 30 weeks in the womb (how the hell they know this is remarkable). Cut to scene with a psychiatrist and adult child, “Doctor, it started in the womb at 32 weeks…”

This Week's News & Headlines: Swearing like a Mother F'er, Prenatal Photo Shoots, Sperm in Swimming Pools, and Involved Dads

This Week's DadsPregnant.com Headlines:

So, here's what I have for you this week:

Mother f’er, swearing and cursing can actually help pregnant women manage pain. Yes, one more reason to not take it personally when your pregnant partner swears at you. That said, NEVER swear back in an effort to manage your pain—that will surely result in more pain. Forget getting that new iPhone video camera, it’s reported that dads-to-be can now see baby in the womb. Schedule your prenatal video shoot once the baby's hearing has developed so when you scream, "Say Cheese" baby will hear you. This article is scary -- I hope you will

This Week's News & Headlines: Fat Lips, Snoring, Stop Crying, And More Sex

This Week's DadsPregnant.com Headlines:

So, here's what I have for you this week:

We've got a story about a pregnant woman slapping her man in the face and giving him a fat lip. He blames her outburst on being pregnant. Not cool pregnant lady -- use us, but don't abuse us. I've included a story about pregnant women's sleep (or lack thereof) and snoring. If she snores like a linebacker on Sunday night following a big game, this might be something worth mentioning to the doctor during that next visit (and don't describe her as a sleepy linebacker). Why mention this to the doc? Pregnant women who

Hey Man, What Happened To Your Skinny Pants?

A good 10 or 15 pounds is all it takes to pop a button, split a seam, or bust a zipper. When it pops, splits, rips, tears, or busts it's time to get bigger pants. When an expectant father gets bigger pants during his partner's pregnancy, the new pants he wears are called "fat pants." That would mean the old pants hanging in his closet become his "skinny pants." That's how skinny pants are defined in the world of the expectant father.

For Father’s Day, we ask soon-to-be dads about their imminent futures

Happy soon-to-be Father's Day! Came across this article for soon-to-be dads:

Kansas City Star
On Father’s Day, every man with a child knows his role: open gifts, watch sports, eat food, goof off. And why not? You’ve earned it, Dad. But what about expectant fathers? You know, the ones with pregnant wives who aren’t technically fathers yet, but will be soon. What do they get? How about a chance to express themselves in our prospective dads Father’s Day roundtable? We brought four of them together to quiz them about their upcoming role.

Our participants are Jonathan Boese, 24, a family resource worker from Olathe; Jim DeGood, 34, director of marketing at the Lyric Opera, also from Olathe; Scott Martens, 35, a civil engineer from Kansas City, Kan.; and Pat Srinivas, 38, an investment analyst from Overland Park.

Q. As a new dad you’re in for a magical set of new experiences. Ever have someone throw up on your shoulder?

JONATHAN: No, but I’m sure it’s coming. >>> read entire aricle

Young Single and Pregnant -- What Now?

A reader wrote a letter to Lisa Belkin (Lisa pens the Motherlode column in the New York Times) sharing her situation. The pregnant 22-year-old is educated, single, pregnant and weighing her options. She doesn't want to be beat up by readers. She wants honest advice. Hundreds of people have responded. Thought it might be helpful to get some men in the mix. Here's the article: Young, Single, and Pregnant -- Now What?

Warding Off Men During Labor

Interesting article about the role of men during labor and delivery (from The Irish Times).

One doctor recommends not having men in the delivery room because men cause more harm than good. Sure, a clueless dad might heighten the stress, but an expectant father who understands his role and the process is a partner who can eleviate stress --- not pile it on. The more we know about the process the easier it is to support our partner before, during, and after it. Here's the piece:

The Irish Times
Evidence Expectant Fathers Get Fat

If your tight pants aren't evidence enough, there's a new poll out of the UK that says 20 percent of expectant fathers gain a stone (approx. 14 pounds):

BBC
A fifth of 5,000 men surveyed said they were given larger meals, and 41% said there were more snacks in the house. The poll, for marketing company Onepoll, also found 25% of men ate more food to make their partner feel better about her weight gain.

How Much Weight Should She Gain

If you find she's not within the new guidelines, talk to her doctor about it. This can be a dangerous conversation to have with a pregnant woman...

Wall Street Journal

Women who are underweight (BMI less than 18.5) should gain 28-40 pounds.
